What the idea should look like

We translate a concept into a visual direction: visual language, typography, colour mood and a key visual that shows as a draft how the idea will come across later.

What this is about

An idea rarely convinces as text. Only once you can see it can you decide whether it holds. A creative concept in design delivers exactly that: a direction you can judge before everything goes into production.

Seeing instead of describing

A draft settles in five minutes what a concept paper needs three meetings for. That is why we show something visible early on.

Several directions

We deliberately put different routes on the table, so a real decision is possible and not just a nod to the only proposal.

From draft to system

We develop the chosen direction so it can be carried over to many formats, instead of only working on the presentation image.

An idea convinces when you can see it.

Situations that typically bring clients to us

  • The concept is settled, but nobody can picture what it looks like.

  • Drafts are discussed by taste rather than against objectives.

  • A campaign has no visual thread holding it together.

  • Every activity looks as if it came from a different company.

  • A pitch or a trade fair is coming up and there is no look for it.

  • The existing templates feel arbitrary and interchangeable.

  • None of this sounds like you?

What we actually do

Design routes

Several design directions as drafts, so you can decide which one fits the message.

Visual language and colour mood

Defining what is shown: people, products or details, in which mood and with which colours.

Typography and layout principle

How text is set and how the space is divided, so every format visibly belongs together.

Key visual

One motif that brings the idea to the point and stays recognisable at small sizes too.

Campaign look

A visual thread that works across adverts, website and print.

Developing it into a kit

Templates and rules your team can design with later, without the look falling apart.

How we work

  • 01

    Take in the concept

We clarify which message is to be carried and who it is aimed at.

  • 02

    Draft the directions

Several approaches are worked out far enough to be comparable.

  • 03

    Choose and sharpen

Together we settle on one direction and work in the objections.

  • 04

    Develop it out

The draft becomes the templates, rules and files everyone works with from there.

The result is a look you can carry over to new formats. Tell us what you are planning.

Frequently asked questions

An idea rarely convinces as text. Only once you can see it can you decide whether it holds.

What does a creative concept in design at dxm deliver?

Something visible you can judge: several design routes as drafts, plus visual language, colour mood, typography and layout principle and – depending on the task – a key visual. A draft settles in five minutes what a concept paper needs three meetings for. We then develop the chosen direction so it can be carried over to many formats and does not only work on the presentation image.

Is this only for advertising campaigns?

No. A creative concept in design carries a product launch, a trade fair appearance, a pitch, an annual report or a digital presence just as well. Whenever several activities are meant to visibly belong together, they need a visual thread. Without one, every activity looks as if it came from a different company.

How does a project like this start?

With the brief, the audience, the message and the question of what should happen after the contact. That often shows that the real task is a different one from the first line of the brief. After that we deliberately put several directions on the table, so a real decision is possible – and not just a nod to the only proposal. The discussion follows the objectives, not personal taste.

Can we carry on internally afterwards?

Yes, that is the aim. The chosen direction becomes a kit: templates, layout rules, colour and typeface specifications and examples for the most important formats. Your team or a production partner can keep designing with it without the look falling apart. For new occasions we extend the kit instead of starting from scratch each time.

The concept is ready, the image missing?

Tell us what you are planning. We will show you directions you can genuinely decide between.
