Webdesign & Development

Accessible websites that can actually be used

We build websites that work with a keyboard, with a screen reader and on small screens, and we check existing sites against the requirements of the BFSG and WCAG.

What this is about

Since the German Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG), many online shops and digital services have to be accessible. More important than the obligation is everyday use: anyone who operates a site with the keyboard alone, has poor eyesight or is on a small display should still be able to order and get in touch.

BFSG and WCAG

The German Accessibility Strengthening Act applies to many shops and digital services. Testing is based on the WCAG criteria, which we translate into concrete tasks for your site.

Audit first, rebuild after

We test with a keyboard, a screen reader and automated tools, document the findings and work through them by urgency. That way it is always possible to show what has already been done.

Built properly instead of retrofitted

Semantic HTML, sufficient contrast, a visible focus and plain language cost barely any extra effort when they are part of the work from the start. Overlay widgets are no substitute for that.

When pages are not accessible, for many people they are simply not there.

Situations that typically bring clients to us

  • Your shop falls under the BFSG and it is unclear what needs to be done.

  • The website cannot be operated fully with the keyboard.

  • Contrast and font sizes are too weak for comfortable reading.

  • Forms report errors that no screen reader can read out.

  • Images have no meaningful alternative text because nobody owns the task.

  • A relaunch is coming up and this time accessibility should be part of it from the start.

  • None of this sounds like you?

Then tell us what you are actually dealing with.

What we actually do

Audits of existing websites

We go through the site technically and practically and deliver a prioritised list instead of an unreadable audit report.

Accessible development

A clean structure, correct labels, keyboard operation and a visible focus are part of our normal build.

Design with sufficient contrast

We check colours, font sizes and states during design, so nothing has to be undone later.

Forms and interactive elements

Forms, filters and dialogues in particular decide accessibility. We build them so they can be announced and operated.

Support for your editorial team

Alternative text, sensible headings and plain language are editorial work. We show what matters.

Documentation you can follow

We record what has been implemented and where limitations deliberately remain, as the basis for your accessibility statement.

How we work

  • 01

    Audit

A survey of the website covering operation, structure, contrast and forms.

  • 02

    Prioritise

We sort by impact and effort. Whatever blocks real use comes first.

  • 03

    Implement

Adjustments to design, front end and content, together with your editorial team.

  • 04

    Record

Documentation of the current state and the open points, so the situation stays traceable.

Accessibility becomes part of the site, not an addendum. Send us the link and we will tell you where the biggest barriers are.

Frequently asked questions

Accessibility is everyday usability: keyboard, contrast, forms. And yes, often a legal obligation too.

What does an accessible website mean in practice?

That the site can be operated entirely with the keyboard, that the focus stays visible, that contrast and font sizes are sufficient and that structure and headings follow a logical order. Images need meaningful alternative text, forms need clearly labelled fields and error messages a screen reader can read out. This is assessed against the WCAG criteria, which we translate into concrete, workable tasks for your site.

Is this only relevant for public sector clients?

No. Since June 2025 the German Accessibility Strengthening Act has also covered many online shops and digital services from private providers, with exemptions for micro-enterprises among others. Regardless of the obligation, accessible sites are easier for everyone to use, work more reliably on small displays and are easier for search engines to process. Whether and how the BFSG applies to you is something we clarify at the start.

Can you audit existing websites?

Yes. We test with a keyboard, a screen reader and automated tools, document the findings and sort them by urgency and effort. You do not get an unreadable audit report but a prioritised list that we will work through directly if you want. What has been implemented and where limitations deliberately remain, we record in a way you can follow, as the basis for your accessibility statement.

Does this replace a formal BITV audit?

No. We build to the WCAG criteria and document the current state; we do not issue a formal certificate. If your contract or tender requires an audit by an accredited body, we prepare for it and fix the findings afterwards. We advise against overlay widgets: they do not address the causes.

Not sure how accessible your website is?

Send us the link. We will look at the site and tell you where the biggest barriers are.
